Sharepoint Search capabilities have only increased with Sharepoint 2013. Companies that have enormous quantities of data can retrieve it more quickly than they ever would have imagined.
The program has a few different search components that help with this function. For example, the crawl component crawls through any content that you want in order to find the properties and metadata that you want. You can then have it send this data to a component that processes the data. The content processing component can take the crawled items and then transform them into something that can then be indexed through an index component.
The content processing component can also handle maps.
Using Search Overview
In order to use search within Sharepoint, it depends on what version you have or are you using a 3rd party software such as X1 Sharepoint search. For example SharePoint 2013 is different than other versions. One thing that’s new is that the search technology in Sharepoint is much faster. Technologies from Bing have also been added to the program especially in terms of enterprise functions. There’s plenty of room to customize these elements as well if you wish. You can also use a lot of different add-on
The crawl part of the process doesn’t do any processing at all, is one thing that’s important to note. It’s also important to note that if you have an older version of Sharepoint, you need to have Windows Search 4.0 installed. You can search for specific tools in older versions as well such as 2010 lists, Documents and Calendar. You can also search within notepad. If you are searching for the first time, you will need to do an index of all of your data first.
The reason for this is because indexing makes a little note of where all of the relevant data on your computer is and then flags it so that it can be easily located during searches. It just makes everything easier to find and it can even speed up search results.
It’s just something that you really need to do in order to make sure that everything works out properly in terms of getting the search results you want in the time frame you want without any kind of errors popping up. It’s also true that you need to make sure you have the kind of installation that works for searching.
Some installations will actually have this feature turned off. Some employers might not want employees to have access to all of the information available on the drive so they might opt to disable the function.
As a result, it’s important to make sure that you ask anyone involved with the project at a higher level to make sure that you have clearance to get a search accomplished. This is just a natural result of security measures many organizations add in order to maintain data integrity and safety.
One way to check this initially is to see whether the search button appears in the ribbon at the top of the program if you’re using a more recent version like Sharepoint 2010. If it is, then security is the reason why.
